Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI):

Symbolism: Maroon and white are the colors traditionally associated with the Medical Corps. The serpent is adapted from the Army Medical Service insignia. The torch is representative of knowledge.

Background: The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the U.S. Army Medical Training Center on 11 February 1959. It was cancelled on 20 July 1973.
